Avoid this! September 3, 2010 chefg 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I tried 3 of these - and all 3 went back to Amazon (one more reason for dealing with Amazon). It played SD videos OK, but started and stopped on blu-ray videos. LG product support said a software "update" would fix the problem - it didn't. Compatibility shouldn't have been a problem, since it was cabled to a brand new LG LED LCD.
Good, not perfect September 3, 2010 Amazonian (Around the World) BD550 is feature rich, great picture and sound. Software and partner support leave a lot to be desired.
SOFTWARE
First, the Display Settings is a mess. You have choices for Auto, 480, 720, 1080 i & p respectively + AUTO. If you select Auto or 1080p, then I do not get any sound on YOUTUBE. Need to go back into SETTINGS and change to 1080i or lower. Now you get sound on YOUTUBE. Then go back to reset 1080p to watch VUDU or Bluray. That stinks. I'm not really sure what AUTO actually does, but it doesn't seem to work. This needs a software fix asap.
PARTNER SUPPORT
VUDU won't stream unless you change the DNS to 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 and LG recommends OPENDNS values. You should use the VUDU DNS recommendations. None of this of course is documented anywhere, so you can spend days trying to trouble shoot it.
MISC
Why not put the BD USB slot in back?
I am interested in other experiences you all may have had with this.
Overall very happy September 2, 2010 J. Leonard (Michigan) Purchased this player due to it's recommended netflix capabilities. For netflix and other streaming, it works fabulous. As for blu-ray discs, this unit seems to be a bit more "picky" than my Magnovox, in that it will not play certain rentals. New blu rays, however, it will play them all. Didn't want to give it a 4 out of 5 for this though, just wanted to warn others that unless they have brand new blu-rays, they might not be happy with the outcome. Sound quality is good, picture quality is very nice and standard for a blu-ray player. Again, the only thing I could find wrong with it (which may not be anything at all) is that some rentals, if they are not perfect or sans scuffs and scratches, may not play in the player. I highly recommend this unit if you want an efficient netflix player in your television room.
Works great August 29, 2010 L. Castle (Florida) I bought this to view Netflix and to upgrade my old DVD player. It works perfectly so far. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks though and it is too early to review for long term use.
Very nice unit August 27, 2010 J. Wollens I was looking for a Blue Ray player that had netflix built into it. This unit has a great picture. One warning though, luckily I had read an online review on a different site that warned the initial output setting is 1080i, so if you have a 1080p capable TV as I do you need to go into your settings and switch it to 1080p!! Except for that setup was a breeze and the picture seems better than my Sony blue ray picture, and it definitely opens and closes the tray much faster.
When I got the system I immediately updated the firmware to the latest version. Everything I use worked great, but one of the streaming movie services besides netflix caused the system to lock up. But, I assume they will fix that in the next firmware version.
The only thing we use on this system is DVD's, Blue Rays, Netflix and Pandora. These services all work flawlessly. We also have Roku netflix players and the quality is nearly as good as those. The interface for netflix is quite good as well, not as good as the latest roku software update, but pretty close. My only complaint.... you can browse different movie genres, but at least with this version of the software you can't search for a title, at least not that we could find. This is something you can do with the Roku if you have the latest software installed. But, considering a Rokup player that only does netflix and doesn't play discs is nearly a hundred bucks this all in one DVD, Blue Ray, and netflix device is a bargain.
I would buy this system again.
NOTE: this system requires a wired ethernet port and cable to use the Netflix or Pandora option, it does not have wireless capabilities.
